I want to support SPARC!    Give Now

SPARC is thrilled to announce that New Voices for the Theater will be moving forward this summer for the 31st annual Festival of New Works.

As always, SPARC is dedicated to providing our New Voices student playwrights with a meaningful educational experience. While this year the program will look a little different, we are still committed to excellence.

Historically, New Voices student playwrights come to Richmond for a two week intensive residency, where they live, work and play together. Unfortunately, this year we cannot physically come together due to COVID-19, but we are not going to let that stop us from taking the program and festival online. As they say, the show must go on!

This summer, New Voices’ 2020 Playwright-in-Residence, Jami Brandli, will conduct online playwriting workshops and will work individually with eight student playwrights in developing their plays. Their work will prepare them for the second phase of the program, where professional directors will use a virtual rehearsal room to guide an ensemble in a reading of the student playwrights’ plays for the 31st annual Festival of New Works.

On July 10 & 11, 2020 the Festival of New Works will be recorded. The following week of July 13, 2020 the recordings will be available for the public to view on social media, on our website, and on YouTube. More details coming soon!
